Auburn Career Center Nature vs Nurture in Twin Studies Questions

I’m working on a global health discussion question and need guidance to help me learn.

A.) Studying twins allows you to get an inside look at two identical people and so you could test the effect of nature on one and the effect of nurture on the other. You could also get a story like Debbie and Sharon where there are twins that reconnect after being apart for so long and observing the similarities and differences. B.) Nature. The twins from the video, Debbie and Sharon, lived separately from each other for the first 45 years of their lives. However, they still have a bunch of similarities. For example, it was mentioned they both made the same funny face when they were little. I do not believe that was a coincidence. Also, Debbie and Sharon wore the same shirt despite not knowing they both had it. To me, it is too similar to be a simple coincidence. Source: https://www.today.com/video/nature-or-nurture-twin…

After reading so much about twin studies, I realized that it is a fascinating topic for me to learn about. I didn’t know about twin studies until today, and I think it’s interesting to see the difference between nature and nurture and how it affects twins in their environments and their genetics. So after analyzing twin studies, I realized it relates to the debate on nature vs. nurture because the monozygotic twins have identical genes, but they have differences due to epigenetics in them. The epigenetics are under the control of our environment and because of this, the differences in identical twins are due to the environment as well. So for this question, I read the lectures and for some reason, I wasn’t sure which one to pick, regarding what has more influence in an individual’s life, nature or nurture. At first I wanted to say that nurture has more influence because the life experience the twins experience can determine their behavior throughout their lives and make them behave in certain ways. But as I started analyzing what nature means in this case for the twin studies, I realized that their genetics determines their behaviors, and their personality traits and abilities to do things are in their nature as well. So based on what I read, I believe that both nature and nurture has a big influence on an individual because the expression of the genes we have is under the control of environmental triggers. Both nature and nurture play a big part in the twin studies, and I believe that both are important when it comes to the twin’s lifestyle. Both genetics and the experiences they go through with their families and the people they choose to be friends with can influence their behavior and actions as well.
