Clinical Microsystem Assessment #1 (Purpose). INTRODUCTION Clinical microsystems are the front-line units that provide most health care to most people. They are the places where patients, families and health care providers meet. Microsystems also include support staff, processes, technology and recurring patterns of information, behavior, and results. Central to every clinical microsystem is the patient.

Microsystems (clinical and non-clinical units) are the building blocks that form hospitals. The quality of hospital care can be no better than the quality produced by the smaller units, labs, pharmacy, physical therapy, and other systems that come together to provide care. The Leadership/Management Project begins with a series of five assessment of the clinical microsystem where you work (or worked in a previous job). You will be assessing the clinical microsystem based on the ‘5 Ps’- Purpose, Patients, Professionals ,Processes, and Patterns- developed by Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy http://www.clinicalmicrosystem.org (Links to an external site.)

Clinical Microsystem Assessment #1: PURPOSE. (Minimum 2 pages, Maximum 4 pages; APA 7th ed. format; use supporting citations- See #5 below). In this first writing assignment, assess the PURPOSE of the clinical microsystem where you work (currently or previously. Organize the paper using the following headings and include the following:

1. Clinical Microsystem Overview Identify what type of clinical microsystem you are assessing, and in what type of hospital it is located (rural, urban, #beds, not-for-profit/for-profit/faith-based, teaching hospital, etc.)

2. State the Organization’s Vision/Mission/Purpose Statement (this is usually found on the organization’s web page and/or in the employee handbook).

3. State the Clinical Microsystem’s (your selected unit) Vision/Mission/Purpose Statement. You may find this in an orientation packet for new employees to your unit. Determine if it aligns with the organization’s mission/vision/purpose and provide examples to illustrate if this alignment is present or absent. If there is no unit Vision/Mission/Purpose statement, you will need to develop one for this section. Start by asking your co-workers (nurses and non-nurses) what they see as the unit’s purpose. Why does your unit exist? Why is everyone there? Based on the ideas shared with you by your co-workers (and your own perceptions/ideas), develop a Vision/Mission/Purpose purpose statement for your unit in 1-2 sentences.

4. Congruency of Organizational and Microsystem Mission. Does the organizational culture (how employees interact with each other and with patients) seem congruent with the organization’s mission/vision or purpose statement? Here are some statements that might help you in assessing whether or not the organizational culture is consistent with the stated mission (you don’t have to comment on each; they are only a prompts to help you identify areas where the organization reflects its mission statement and perhaps some areas where it does not):

a) The values of the organization are directed towards patient wellbeing and dignity;

b) A positive climate is visible at every level of the organization;

c) Success is celebrated and staff are praised for good work;

d) Overall, there is a positive culture that supports the delivery of excellent care;

e) We only hire people who are a good fit with the values of the organization;

f) I regularly get feedback on what the organization learns from patient complaints;

g) I regularly get feedback on what the organization learns from incidents and sentinel events;

h) My concerns are listened to;

i) I feel safe, secure and supported in doing my job;

j) Bad behavior is tackled and managed, regardless of who it is.

5. Use at least one module reading and two current (within the past five years), peer-reviewed NURSING journals to support the content.

This assignment reinforces the following End-of-Program Student Learning Outcomes:
