Grand Canyon University Melanoma a Form of Skin Cancer Discussion

My PICOT are (P) melanoma patients or first degree relatives, (I) using safe sun behaviors (C) versus not using sun safe behaviors (O) is beneficial to preventing recurring melanoma and melanoma for those at an increased risk (T) when implemented early.

I live in Florida where the sun is almost always out. My father was also diagnosed with melanoma, despite always living in Ohio, and one of my best dance mom friends was also recently diagnosed with melanoma so I have extra motivation to see what I can do to prevent any other close family or friends from being diagnosed with this. I work for an insurance company and assigned to a local school district where I try to increase preventive services. I recently found a mobile dermatologist who would travel around to the schools to first do the screenings, and then return if needed for any additional follow ups. The mobile dermatologist could be utilized in addition to the research provided to hopefully prevent further suffering from melanoma, or at least catching it as a sooner stage where treatment is more promising and leads to a better quality of life.

Educating patients and first degree relatives of melanoma patients on sun safe behaviors (use of sunscreen above 30 SPF, shade seeking, utilizing hats and long sleeved clothing) were shown to be beneficial at preventing the family members from being diagnosed with melanoma. (Bowen et al., 2019)
