MDC Social Workers Challenge Social Injustice Discussion
I’m trying to study for my Social Work course and I need some help to understand this question.
Read and contemplate the social work value of “social justice” and its accompanying ethical principle in light of recent events related to COVID-19, racial justice, and politics in general. Social Work Value: Social Justice Ethical Principle: Social workers challenge social injustice. Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. Social workers’ social change efforts are focused primarily on issues of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice. These activities seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge about oppression and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers strive to ensure access to needed information, services, and resources; equality of opportunity; and meaningful participation in decision making for all people. Read the value and ethical principle – and contemplate what this means to you as a social worker. In particular, think about the Black Lives Matter protest for racial justice, the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and what is occurring in our national debate at this time. How do you view social justice in light of Black Lives Matter? Do they have a right to protest? Is this the same or different than what occurred on January 6, 2021? Should people be protesting during a pandemic, or are some things worth the risk? Share your thoughts – and your reactions to these issues in light of our core value of Social Justice. Reflect on these events as they relate to your belief in social justice. Reflect on your thoughts, experiences as well as hope for the future. What have you experienced during this time? What are the lessons that you have learned from living during this period? |
