West Coast University Code of Ethics for Nurses Discussion Responses

Two discussion replies to students based on the work you did the other day for me. Must be cited and APA as well:

As you prepare to transition from an academic student to a newly graduated nurse in clinical practice, consider the following:

  • What two provisions in the ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses may help you in this transition?

As we transition into our Nursing career, ethics will always be an important part of delivering adequate care to our patients. One of the provisions that caught my attention is Provision 5 which states that Nurses must show self-worth and self-respect as they show these two qualities to their patients on a daily basis. Nurses too must be able to demonstrate these qualities to themselves in order to live a happy life. In order to live a healthy life and promote this to their patients, Nurses must practice self-care. The provision also mentions professional growth which can be acquired by gathering more knowledge (Lacman, 2009). As Nurses, we must keep up to date with the newest evidence based practices as well as research in order to provide the best care to our patients.

Another provision that caught my eye is Provision 3 which states patient advocacy and protecting the patients rights (Haddad & Geiger, 2020). By advocating for our patients, we are able to provide the best health outcome for them and at the same time educate them on the rights that they have while at the hospital such as HIPAA. The patient must also know how to report malpractice or other issues pertaining to their care.

  • Expand on your chosen provisions and describe how adopting them into your clinical practice will help you to be successful.

Nursing requires the use of critical thinking, empathy, compassion, and demonstrating evidence based practice. By practicing the code of ethics and the provisions that entail it, we will be able to provide safe and evidence based practice. By demonstrating safety, respect, and showing the patients compassion while putting aside personal problems outside of work, this will help me to demonstrate professionalism as well as set clear work boundaries (Haddad & Geiger, 2020). By putting myself first when it comes to self-care this can also ensure burning out does not happen. Lastly, by providing advocacy and ensuring the patient’s personal or sensitive information is protected I will be showing adherence to the ANA’s code of ethics.

#2: replying to my professor who replied to my original post that you created. if this doesn’t work for you let me know I can get a different post to respond to.

Thank you Kristine. Provision 1 states that the nurse practices with compassion and respect for inherent dignity, worth and unique attributes of every person. Is #9 your second provision?
There are 5 sections to provision 1, which is most valuable to you:
1.1 Respect For Human Dignity
1.2 Relationships with Patients
1.3 The Nature of Health
1.4 The Right to Self-Determination
1.5 Relationships with Colleagues and Others
