The concept of life review is one of self-reflection. It involves the overall review of a person’s life and their experience throughout that life. This review can reflect on many aspects of a person’s life. Reviewing aspects of a person’s life like their experience in education, career or family life can prove to be therapeutic for the patient. It provides a way for patients to reflect on their lives in a meaningful way that lets them obtain a sense of achievement in regards to their life. As discussed by Parrish and Miyawaki in 2019, “For example, reminiscence therapy tends to involve a more unstructured, spontaneous process of recalling pleasurable memories, whereas life review is a more structured, guided and evaluative process that involves therapeutic listening skills. It guides individuals through an examination of life themes, stages, and turning points. A specified number of sessions focus on different stages of the life cycle, from childhood on. Using cognitive reframing as needed, life review aims to alleviate or prevent depressive symptoms by helping older adults come to terms with more difficult memories, enhance their self-esteem, and find meaning in their lives. In contrast, in reminiscence therapy clients focus on pleasant memories and are not asked to evaluate memories, although they may do so voluntarily” (61). In this way life review differs from just remembering memories. Life review provides a structured way to remember and improve how a patient feels about their life experiences thus far. Both types of therapy involve the remembrance of past life experiences but life review focuses on the entire sum of a person’s life and not just the good memories. Patient undergoing life review therapy can improve their outlook on their overall life and they can improve their mental health. Life review therapies are particularly helpful in patients suffering from depressive mental illnesses. It can help them process past life experiences and evaluate them in different ways. By doing so they can decrease their number of symptoms associated with depression and go on to live more peaceful and productive lives. Life review therapy can therefore stand to help patients reflect on their overall life experiences and give them a sense of ownership in regards to their lives and past experiences.
