Application of Evidence to Focused Question

Now that you’ve sought out answers to verify and support your focused question and you’ve
successfully analyzed and credited your research, it is time to apply the answers from your
research to your focused question.
In your Application section, explain how the sources apply to your focused question. Even
further, explain why this source is the best source for answering your question. Let the reader
know why this source is vital to answering your focused question—why you chose it above all
others. Do this for each source, but perform it in a “synthesized” fashion. You know what this
means. Don’t move source by source explaining its importance to your question; rather, discuss
your sources and their applications to your question in a synthesized, theme-based manner. In
short, make it a discussion rather than a list. This is your chance to discuss any of the subtopics
related to your PICO (and their significance) in more detail, as well as add any interesting pieces
of information from the studies, such as interesting rationale that the authors posited.
Thus, if you’re discussing glycemic control, your subtopics might be type of insulin
regimen, hemoglobin levels, and fasting blood glucose levels. You would have a paragraph
(or two) on each of these subtopics. In each paragraph, you would discuss how each source
addressed (or did not address) the subtopic and how it was similar to/different than the
other source(s). You may also include a paragraph on any interesting aspects of the studies
that are significant to the discussion but haven’t been mentioned yet.
While in your Identification and Appraisal of Literature, you moved through discussing
your sources objectives, methods, and outcomes in a synthesized fashion, in the Application
of Evidence to Focused Question, you will move through by discussing the three or so most
important topics to understanding your focused question in a synthesized fashion. You are

Conclusions
This is the last section of your essay, so gear up. It’s almost over!
In the conclusions section of your essay, you will want to re-evaluate your application of
evidence from a critical standpoint and suggest areas for improvement and/or areas for further
exploration. The discussion will gradually become more generalized as it progresses. Move out
from your specific research and focused question to answer how your topic may be applied in the
field. Or, how might it benefit patients? Or, how might it benefit nursing in general? Whichever
angle you choose for your conclusions, you should try to discuss how your topic fits into
healthcare as a whole. Again, this both pulls you from your specific discussion out to a more
general discussion, and it helps to re-emphasize the significance of your discussion within a
shared context, which is the proper format for a conclusion.
