The predominant mode of cell death during HIV infection is not caused by the virus but the immune cell response. Therefore, HIV (the virus itself) does not cause AIDS; it is possible to be HIV-positive and never develop AIDS.

The project culminates in a narrated PPT presentation (max 20 minutes; 10 slides excluding the title and reference slides). The PPT content must be supported by relevant content from the course textbook and 5 peer-reviewed journal/research articles (articles may be within the last 10 years due to the project’s focus). When the group appraises the credibility of the pathophysiology theory, remember that current evidence (within the last 5 years) carries more weight than older references. The group is required to present both “supporting” and “refuting or questioning” evidence for the theory of pathophysiology selected.

Each group writes 5 test questions for the content in the presentation. Students who peer-review the project will answer the questions in their response posts. Each student will peer-review two group’s projects using the downloadas a guide. Each peer-review must be supported with one current (within the last 5 years), peer-reviewed journal/research article.

The PPT must address the following:

1. Identify the controversial theory and a disease associated with it.

2. Discuss the evidence that supports the pathophysiology theory.

3. Discuss the evidence that refutes or questions the credibility of the pathophysiology theory.

4. Identify an intervention or treatment for the disease that is based on the pathophysiology theory; and discuss the evidence (or lack of) that it is effective.

5. Discuss another mechanism/reason (other than the pathophysiology theory selected) that could cause or facilitate development of the problem/disorder (e.g., environment, medication, genetics, social determinants of health).

6. Based on the findings of the project, does your group accept or reject this pathophysiological explanation/theory for the disease/disorder?
