University of Kentucky From Novice to Expert Theory Discussion

Preparing the Assignment

Identify your specialty area of NP practice. Select a nursing theory, borrowed theory, or interdisciplinary theory provided in the lesson plan or one of your own findings. Address the following:

Origin

Meaning and scope

  • Logical adequacy
  • Usefulness and simplicity
  • Generalizability
  • Testability
  • Finally, provide an example how the theory could be used to improve or evaluate the quality of practice in your specific setting. What rationale can you provide that validates the theory as applicable to the role of the nurse practitioner.

A formal definition notes that theory is a group of interrelated concepts, assumptions, and propositions that explains or guides action. Grand theories are abstract, general, and broad incorporating all concepts of the metaparadigm. Mid-range and practice theories are narrower in focus, may include one or all of the metaparadigm concepts, and lend to practical application in practice settings. For the nursing profession, a nursing theory provides a view or a window into the reality of nursing.?

Borrowed, shared, and interprofessional theories add value to nursing practices. Understanding and incorporating non-nursing theories in our practice, helps to expand our perspectives, provides enhanced person-centered care, and promotes effective work within interdisciplinary health care teams. However, it is still essential for nursing to generate new nursing specific theories for continued knowledge development of the nursing discipline and to maintain a separate identity for the profession of nursing.

Key Points

  • Grand nursing theory provides a high level of abstraction and may be applied to all areas of the profession
  • Middle range nursing theories are narrow in scope and address a specific aspect of nursing
  • Nursing uses many theories borrowed from other professions

Identify your specialty area of NP practice. Select a nursing theory, borrowed theory, or interdisciplinary theory provided in the lesson plan or one of your own findings. Address the following:

Origin- Family Nurse Practitioner

Meaning and scope- A nurse practitioner can write prescriptions, provide care, and assess their patients accordingly, and treat their patients based on their health needs.

Logical adequacy- It provides understanding to their health issues and helps provide help for the patients’ health outcome.

Usefulness and simplicity- It is very useful because it offers patients easy healthcare options, and it is a simple process. Nurse practitioners care about their patients and will take the time to sit down with their patients as well (Butts & Rich, 2018).

Generalizability- It covers a broad group of clients and their situations, reaching many kinds of patient’s needs.

Testability- It can test different illnesses and diseases for their patients.

Finally, provide an example how the theory could be used to improve or evaluate the quality of practice in your specific setting. What rationale can you provide that validates the theory as applicable to the role of the nurse practitioner.

Deontology theory could be used to improve the quality of practice in family nurse practitioner because it is based off nurse duty and rules (Dimitrios & Antigoni, 2019). This theory lets you have freedom to decide what to do based off what your duty is as a nurse (Dimitrios & Antigoni, 2019). This validates that this theory is applicable to the role of the nurse practitioner because we act sometimes on our nursing judgement, and it is our duty to do that.

Hello Professor and class,

The theory I am interested in and will use in my future NP practice is Pender’s health promotion model. Nola J. Pender developed her model for patients, families, and the community to prevent diseases and promote health. Education and community awareness of diseases is important as it is easy to prevent disease than treat. “The current scenario of increasing costs for healthcare-associated with episodic illness treatment, increases in chronic, preventable conditions within the population, and the focus on managing healthcare costs provide ample incentive to further explore the concepts of the health promotion model as APNs strive to improve health outcomes in patient populations” (Butts & Rich, 2018). This model is more useful in outpatient settings and community clinics, where NP can assess patient history, find the problem, and make healthy changes to prevent it from happening again. “Pender’s model provides important guides for nursing professionals as they focus on health promotion strategies for patients and for research aimed at prediction of health-promoting behaviors” (Ibrahim Agtam, 2018). There are five concepts of Pender’s promotion model: a person is the center of the model. Unique patient behavior will determine what component will be addressed. The environment is the place where a person mainly is taking his health knowledge. A nurse practitioner is the main souse of promoting Pender’s health model and the health of patients and the community. The challenges today health care is experiencing is lack of information and educational resources for people and the community about health and body. I am interested in researching factors to promote personal awareness and prevent diseases. We can observe how today’s population looks for healthy food choices, physical activities, and much more to promote health. Pender’s health model is the perfect way to plan healthy life.
