Utica Mortality of Newborns & Children Is Very Instrumental to Global Health Response

Post A

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.2: mortality of newborns & children is relevant to the global health since they are trying to prevent the unnecessary deaths of newborns and children under age five across the world. Moreover, they are advocating for the wellbeing and looking to guarantee a healthy live for all children. There has been a significant progress in reducing child mortality around the world. The mortality rate of children under-five has dropped by nearly 60% since 1990, and therefore today millions of more children survive to adolescence in comparison with mortality rates from three decades ago. The goal is to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 deaths per 1,000 live births and under-five mortality to at least as low as 25 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030 (UNICEF, 2020).

To address this specific target nurses are required to be trained and empowered with knowledge to educate parents in providing the best care for their children. They can deliver research-based care and deliver appropriate guidance to caregivers (Osingada & Porta, 2020). For instance, maternal education on breastfeeding and weaning is important to improve child survival. Additionally, nurses need to educate parents on the importance of well annual visits, immunizations and early childhood preventative and curative services to reduce and try to put an end to child mortality (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], n.d.).

The nursing profession can positively impact global health issues. Nurses can play a role of global leaders of change by becoming active in communities; professional nursing organizations; policy making and advocacy organizations; and their workplaces (Edmonson et al., 2017). For example, their valuable expertise, competencies, and perspectives could impact the prevention, spread, and management of infectious diseases. Their role in care delivery, education, leadership, and policy making are important to influence population health outcomes. As global nurses we need to protect the best interest and care for the patient through evidence-based practice, interprofessional cooperation and ongoing education.

Sub Saharan Africa remains the region with the highest under-five mortality rate in the world followed by Central and Southern Asia. Here infectious diseases, including pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria, remain a leading cause of deaths in children under five, along with preterm birth and intrapartum-related complications. Moreover, malnourished children, particularly those suffering from severe acute malnutrition, are at a higher risk of death from these common childhood illnesses. Infant mortality is often linked to several factors such as maternal health, quality and access to medical care, socioeconomic conditions, and public health. Children under five years of age are most vulnerable to disease and one child in every four children is dying from preventable disease (World Health Organization [WHO], n.d.).

  • non-communicable diseases & mental health

1.First, discuss how the target selected is relevant to global health. Has there been any progress or improvement in achieving this target for SDG 3?

In many countries, both domestic and pollution upsurge the danger of cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses and are leading risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Health risks from this kind of contamination are particularly high among women and children. Ambient air pollution from traffic, industry, power generation, waste-burning, and residential fuel combustion resulted in around 4.2 million deaths in 2016. (United Nations, 2019, p. 26). Mental health is a growing issue in many countries due to limited to no resources.

2.What are some interventions that nurses could implement to address this specific target?

In poor countries, many deaths occurred because trained health workers or routine interventions are limited or unavailable. In some countries, a health emergency can drive people into bankruptcy or poverty. This is because all the family’s money is used for healthcare. Nurses can implement interventions to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, including mental health; and tackle environmental factors contributing to ill health, such as air pollution and the lack of safely managed water and sanitation (United Nations, 2019, p. 29). Immunization is widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions, saving millions of lives. This intervention could be immunizations for all non-communicable diseases. Another intervention for mental health could be obtaining counselors to empower all women and young girls. This would ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages. Hospitals can open volunteer programs for medical personnel to come and help out with vaccinations and physicals.

3.Nurses are aware that disease affects the health of people globally. You will also notice many of the SDG health targets are preventative, in other words, they fit within the ANA Code of Ethics element regarding social justice. Discuss what nurses can do within the scheme of a global public health effort to address the health target you were assigned. As you respond, consider the healthcare setting where potential patients will present. Think about the target-related concern & the impact on specific countries & ethnic groups. Nurses can stay vigilance of the changes happening in the global public health system. This includes surveillance focuses on significant health threats and mental health. This nurse believes that efforts to improve early warning systems and manage public health risks can assist with the problem. Keeping in mind that this will be challenging because of the limited resources.
