1. from this week reading, Psychological distress are indicative of impaired mental health and can reflect on common mental disorders, like depressive and anxiety disorders. Financial difficulties are also been found to be one risk factor for redued mental health. Mass media also plays a crucial role during new and rapidly spreading of global health risks. Therefore, to better mitigate the use of effective communication from public officials requires information that helps the public improve awareness of psychological distress and the willingness to obtain information on the internet through the knowledge of preventive behavior as well as intervention measures to ensured psychological well-being don’t exist. 2. Government agency have found to regularly communicate the risk to the public in a variety of media as they encourage preparedness in earthquake resistant. All of these are critical to emergency management but one failure of effective communication is the deep uncertainity of public health which is critical because is do not adhere to specific boundaries and this make risk communication more critical in developing an effective public health preparedness strategies. 3. Lessons learned from an effective risk communication, as an emergency manager is to coordinates with partners before, during and after an emergency become crucial before briefing early announcement of a real or potential risks. 1.From your reading, what is an example of how psychological distress either WAS mitigated or COULD HAVE been better mitigated via the use of effective risk communication from public officials?

Through the analysis of the articles, psychological distress is an aspect that can be regarded as emotional suffering that makes the victims to encounter difficulties while addressing their daily activities. The distress is associated with the lack of effective plans and strategies that can be utilized to ensure that the distressed individuals are able to cope with the psychological distress (Eldridge et al., 2020). The nature of communication by the public officials is an aspect that can either contribute to the nature of psychological response. For example, if the public communication platforms convey the negative effects associated with the disaster, then there will be a lot of tension that will lead to an increase in fear, anxiety and anger thus increasing psychological distress.

2.Name a success of risk communication, if you can locate one, and alternatively, name a failure of effective risk communication (and why it was deemed a failure).

The best risk communication should address issues that will satisfy the community’s needs and expectations. The communication design has been evident through the updates provided on COVID-19 where people are informed on the best approaches to take if they have the virus. This reduces possible tension across communities where the virus has greatly spread (Ray & Bala, 2020). This means that the communication should be transparent and provided in real-time to reduce possible chances of creating fear and anxiety among the community members.

3.What lessons about effective risk communication will you carry forward in your career in emergency management?

The risk communication has led to the identification of several lessons that are important in ensuring that the victims and those close to the victims do not suffer from any psychological distress. One of the lessons learned is that the public communication operating in the emergency management should ensure that the information passed is reliable and does not elicit mixed feelings (Beamish, 2020). The information should assure the people that all is well. I have also realized that teamwork and coordination across the emergency teams and the communication teams is an important aspect that ensures that all information conveyed is reliable and does not lead to wrong interpretation by the audience.

  1. From your reading, what is an example of how psychological distress either WAS mitigated or COULD HAVE been better mitigated via the use of effective risk communication from public officials? Risk communication may elicit a positive or negative psychological response. Abrams & Greenhawt (2020) acknowledge that the media’s constant attention on Covid resulted in the panicked purchases of PPE. These purchases contributed to the lack of PPE available for healthcare providers to have. A better tactic would have been for strong public messaging regarding the potential impact of Covid while explaining ways that the public could protective themselves. These messages should have also included strong messaging regarding the need to stay calm and avoid purchasing all of the supplies that the healthcare industry needed to safely combat the disease.
  2. Name a success of risk communication, if you can locate one, and alternatively, name a failure of effective risk communication (and why it was deemed a failure). I will use the same example as provided in answer #1. The crisis communication that was provided elicited a strong public response. The success in that story is that the public largely adhered to social distancing, mask utilization, and hand hygiene. The negative is that some members of the public continue to be afraid to leave their homes. I believe that public health officials should be focusing crisis communications on how to safely re-enter into mainstream society while continuing to protect themselves.
  3. What lessons about effective risk communication will you carry forward in your career in emergency management Effective risk communication involves utilizing mediums that engage the public and involving stakeholders early and often (Abrams & Greenhawt, 2020). I am a firm believer that government agencies need to engage their stakeholders (the citizens) more regularly and in a transparent manner. It has been, and will continue to be, a goal to improve my tactics of effective risk communication. During Covid, I helped manage the public health network’s response at the local level as a result of direction they received from DHHS. We met at least 3 times/week, and yet they still craved more information. I routinely heard that the State wasn’t sharing information. Some of this is due to the fact that the information just wasn’t available so I had nothing to share, and some of it was they didn’t hear what was being said. However, it became readily apparent that it was better for me to share things I saw coming on the horizon (with a big disclaimer that the info was subject to change!) so that each coordinator had an opportunity to digest the information and respond accordingly when the the time came.
