Grand Canyon University Evidence Based Practice & Quality Care Discussion

I’m working on a nursing discussion question and need support to help me understand better.

According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, (2015) the four main components that are crucial in the implementation of evidence-based practice include; developing a vision, assessing barriers, prioritizing issues, and integrating into practice. It is important as a researcher to developing a compelling and motivating vision of change that is anchored on quality patient care. After the development of the vision, the researcher should reassess the organization and identify barriers emanating that may affect the implementation process. The barriers may occur at different phases of the implementation. Therefore, the researcher should be alert to any barriers. The next component is the prioritization of issues to ensure the change is smooth, incremental, and undisruptive to the organizational staff and infrastructure. The last component is integrated into practice which involves actualizing the change. EBP champions can be used to convince staff members to adopt the change. Furthermore, scientific evidence and clinical tools should be adequately distributed to staff for use in implementing change (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015).

For my project of implementing a sepsis screening tool to address the rising incidence of sepsis in the facility, one of the most difficult components has been assessing and addressing barriers. Although my organization’s culture promotes change, I realized that most members of the staff had little knowledge regarding EBP which fueled a negative attitude towards implementation. Therefore educating staff members on EBP as well as the proposed project was an uphill task since nurses were already enduring the long shifts of up to 16 hours. However, through the use of summarized scientific evidence, clinical tools, and visual teaching resources we addressed the barriers leading to a general change in attitude regarding the project implementation.
