  • The Role of Outcomes and Quality Improvement in Enhancing and Evaluating Practice Change
In order to effectively integrate evidence into practice, it is important to be able to interpret patient outcomes and understand how those outcomes are reliable and valid to replicate in a practice setting. This gives you the chance to be able to take a study and the evidence from that study and implement it in your practice.
    The Change Curve Model
The Change Curve Model is an important theory to understand how organizations implement change in their culture. The first step of the curve is stagnation or the stage before the organization recognizes the need for change. The next step preparation, followed by implementation, determination, and then fruition of the change being implemented. The nurse is a key part of the Change Curve Model, effecting change through assessment of patients and patient care environments. As part of the interprofessional/interdisciplinary team, the nurse is a pivotal in the implementation of change in a healthcare system.
Change at the Organization and Systems Level
There are many different ways to think about change. Change becomes a part of an individual’s culture, as well as the organizational culture. The different professional/disciplinary theories of change work together to help us understand the most applicable change for an organization. The nurse needs to be able to affect change working with various professions in the healthcare organization including other nurses, physicians, pharmacists, technicians, etc.
Contributions of Leadership Styles and the Implementation of Evidence-Based Change
One of the most important aspects of leadership is being able to recognize where change needs to happen, and to work with the team in the organization to make that change happen. The styles of effective implementation of evidence-based change integrate the mentorship required to successfully implement organizational change that is evidence-based.
After completing this unit, you should be able to:
Appraise the role of outcomes and quality improvement in enhancing and evaluating practice changes.
Analyze the Change Curve model as applicable to organizational change.
Identify interdisciplinary theories that can affect change at the organizational and system levels.
Compare the contributions of various leadership styles to implementation of evidence-based change.
