According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (2021), one out of 8 emergency department visits are related to mental illness or substance abuse disorder. This has an impact of the availability of these services for other members of the population. Not every provider has expertise in managing certain types of mental illness or disorders, but all providers should have access to resources or colleagues that can assist in directing the patient to the facility or provider that can achieve the most desirable outcome for each patient. Not providing our patients with resources to manage their mental health can have a ripple effect on their overall well-being and health as well as their productivity within the population. This also impacts the individual’s family and support system as it puts more stain on these personal resources who are often not adequately equipped or educated to providing care to their loved ones with mental illness. This very important safety initiative and the translational research can help move the evidence into policy and practice for many of the population.
