She called the primary doctor over the phone and notified that acetaminophen is not working for her symptoms and requested physician if she can get another medication that addresses her medical condition. The doctor recommended and informed her that she needs to make appointment and be evaluated at the primary clinic. Julia however, refused to go to doctor and bought acetaminophen 500mg and has been taking the dose of 1500mg every 6 hours.
Directions- Answer the following questions based on the above scenario and case study.
- If you are the nurse who is caring for Julia, what will be your nursing intervention on her behavior of taking extra drugs? What will be the complication of overdose as result of this medication?
- Should this client live by herself or not? If she does not require community support such as assisted living or nursing home, what do you think is the other options to protect her from drug abuse?
- Define a polypharmacy and correlated it to older adult population. Discuss what to be done to mitigate the significant impact of opioid crisis in this regard?
- You are caring for the patient who asks you a pain control constantly to address symptoms. As the nurse, what are your initial assessment before you administer the medication? Could you rule out the patient concern yourself or consult a provider to address the issues of continuous drug use? Please discuss.
