The bundle payment model was supposed to make improvements to the fee for service model. “The overall goal of the BPCI program is to encourage high quality holistic patient care that minimizes complications as opposed to care that is heavily influenced by a billing system and indirect incentives” (Man et al., 2018. P. 238). The bundle payment model is supposed to improve efficiency and quality of care. When bundle payment model started, its goal was to increase quality patient care and reduce costs.

CMS has proposed guidelines to have 50% of all claims paid through bundled payments by 2018 but this has not occurred (Man et al., 2018). There are benefits of the bundle payment model which include cost savings, transparency and better care for patients. Some limitations are that not every procedure is clearly defined like surgical procedures. This causes some confusion as to what will receive full reimbursement.
