EBP Processes: PICO and Critical Appraisal of Evidence

Weekly Objectives 1, 4, and 5 are addressed in this discussion.

Review the group assignment “QI Report of Project: Written” (due Week 5). You will complete selected components of the assignment in order to post in this week’s Discussion Board.

This discussion is a check-in opportunity to share your work on the project thus far, ask questions, and receive feedback from your peers and instructors. Think of it as a working session, similar to what would occur if we were meeting face-to-face in a classroom where you’d share progress and elicit feedback. Weeks 3-4 Discussion Boards will operate in the same manner.

While the “QI Report of Project: Written” is a group assignment, complete the work required to post to this discussion individually. Outside of this discussion forum, collaborate with your group to (1) discuss what each of you completed here, (2) share the various feedback you received from your peers and instructors, and (3) come to an agreement on how you will proceed and present this in your final report. For example, the “QI Report of Project: Written” requires that your group include a PICO question. Here, in this discussion forum, everyone writes their own PICO question and makes their own posts individually. Then, outside of this forum, your group must come to an agreement on how you write and present one PICO question in your final report based on the individual work completed and feedback received in this forum.

Instructions

This is an individual assignment. Using your group’s assigned case study, create a PICO question using the PICO template.* Using the PICO format leads to effective searches and best available evidence pertaining to interventions’ effectiveness. Conduct a literature search for best available evidence supporting best practices. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Library of Systematic Reviews is one of several databases you may search. Refer to Search Resources: Weblinks to Resources for Search and Appraisal* for search assistance and instruction. The document Example of a Search Table* shows one way to organize your search process. Select an appropriate critical appraisal tool. You must be able to identify the methodological approach used in order to select the tool designed to assess that specific approach. Appraise the evidence using the tool (e.g., AGREE II,* JBI*).

  • What is your PICO question? Post completed PICO template and question
  • Summarize your search strategy
  • Indicate the tool you selected to use for critical appraisal and rationale for selection (Note: You will likely identify and appraise several items to determine the “best available evidence” to include in final report. In this discussion post, you are required to post only one appraised item)
  • Completed appraisal/checklist; this should include appraisal criteria and how you applied the appraisal process to your selected resource
  • Include any questions you have and challenges encountered
