The American Public Health Association’s (APHA) 2021 priorities advocate for health care policies and quality initiatives found within the Affordable Care Act such as improving access to healthcare services and decreasing the number of uninsured; and reducing gun violence, funding for crucial public health agencies and organizations, and support of public health laws and regulations.

The APHA recognizes the importance of health reform, but considers this only an initial step to a much larger effort towards increasing access to quality care at all levels of public health. The APHA’s stance is that quality care must encompass transitioning from a health care delivery model that currently focuses on treating sickness, to one that equally addresses prevention strategies (APHA, 2021).

An example of efforts towards quality public health through preventive measures is promoting healthy eating habits, especially among America’s youths who are especially impressionable. This information drives the need to conduct an evaluation such as the Public Health Nursing Assessment (PHNAT) designed to identify communities and populations at risk, in this case, where unhealthy eating habits are most problematic, and developing and implementing strategies to address those areas, and monitoring for effectiveness. Interventions proposed by the APHA include supporting bills that tax sugary drinks, promoting transportation to healthy food locations such as farmer’s markets, and volunteering at food banks.
