It is desirable for the social worker’s personal values to be compatible with the values of the social work profession. If these two value systems are in conflict, one of the two thinks is likely to happen: (1) the worker will go through the motions of representing professional values, but because her or his heart is not in it, the lack of genuineness will be apparent to both clients and colleagues or (2) the worker will reject the profession’s values and principles as a guiding force and respond to clients entirely on the basis of personal beliefs or values. In both cases, the client and the employing agency will lose the benefit of the social work perspective.
