While your analysis does not need to take the format of a formal essay, you should present thorough analysis in writing. You may need to conduct some external research to answer the critical questions that you may have about the system you are examining.
 
Your analysis should include:

  1. An introduction to the sociotechnical system. This includes orienting your reader to the system itself – what is  the constellation of social actors involved, both technical and human? What is the system used for? (400 words)

 

  1. An analysis of what decisions are being automated by the system. There is most likely one broad decision that is being automated, but what supplemental decisions are being automated? (500 words)

 

  1. The history of the system– what are the past developments that are useful for understanding why the system was deemed necessary? What decisions shaped the development of the system? (300 words)

 

  1. The desired outcome of the system– what was the goal of the system and the projected outcome? What consequences were planned? (400 words)

 

  1. What additional outcomes have developed from the use of the system? This is where you should consider unintended consequences and realities that may differ from the stated purpose of the system. (400 words)

 

  1. An analysis of the human actors involved. Which people have what kind of power? How can race, gender, or class analytics help you make sense of how power dynamics work within this system? (400 words)

 

  1. Finally, your analysis should include a couple of paragraphs that reflects on the usefulness of a sociotechnical approachto making sense of this system. That is to say, you must answer the question of why your analysis should be sociotechnical in nature. (400 words)
