UC Santa Barbara Language Development Strategy Reflection Paper

Think about a period where you were learning a language, or teaching one to someone else (it could be a first or second language).* Point out something about the grammar (syntax) that was difficult to acquire about the language, either for you, or the child/person you were teaching. Point out something about the pragmatics that was difficult.

How did you, or the person who taught you, support these challenging aspects of language acquisition in the learner? From the readings, lecture and videos for this week, find an example of a recommended strategy for supporting language development that you can resonate with or that you think might have helped you in mastering or teaching the difficult aspects of language development that you described in the first part of your answer.

Finally, talk about any way in which learning the new language affected the identity or cognitive or reading abilities of you or the person you were teaching.
