The objectives of the debate papers are for students to engage with two pre-assigned and different ideologies on a current debate topic. A list of potential topics is given below and from there, the students have to discuss this topic according to the ideologies outlined below.

Ideologies

For this first debate paper, you are asked to use liberalism and conservatism (or any of their respective variants).

Topics

Each topic is formulated as a question which you should answer (using ideologies) in your paper. Select one of the following topics:

• Is death penalty justifiable?
• Do you think that your behavior is determined solely by your genes (innate qualities)?
• Should democracy be considered the best form of government with regards to individual liberties?
• Should businesses receive tax breaks (or not pay tax at all)?

Once you have chosen your topic, you need to do some research! What information can you find on this topic? How each ideology would answer to this question?

Debate paper

Now that you have chosen your topic, you have to write a 3-4 pages paper (double-spaced, Times New Roman, font 12, margins 2.5cm) in which you will include the following:

a) an introduction where you introduce the topic and tell me how you will structure the paper

b) a general presentation of the arguments for each of the ideologies chosen (this would require you to write several paragraphs)

c) a brief conclusion where you discuss what you think is the best ideology to analyze the issue and why

d) a reference list including at least 3 academic references (one of which has to be your textbook). By academic references, we mean books or articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Referencing must be done using APA style.
