I disagree with the statement that taking a mainstream, or non-Indigenous, perspective is the most efficient way to manage America’s natural resources. First, I think the prevailing view should be the one that can best balance the interests of the greatest number of people, rather than just listening to one faction. Because historically speaking, the prevailing view of the time has not always been the most effective solution. If you ask Americans in the past what they think about natural parks, they’ll say we saved the land from people of primitive tribes. They take it for granted. But from a historical point of view, that land was taken by them, and many people today feel guilty about that. All these are caused by different perspectives and different cultural backgrounds, which will make people at that time have some wrong understanding of the future from the perspective of the present.

In addition, the differences in American mainstream cultural values will directly affect the change of environmental values. This makes it erratic if we manage the environment according to the values of mainstream American culture. The value that each era attaches to the environment is different. For example, in the industrial period, the value they attach to the local environment is not high because the mainstream cultural values of the United States at that time did not attach much importance to environmental protection. So it would have been a disaster if, at that time, we had made mainstream American cultural values a means of controlling America’s natural resources.
