Miami Dade College Japanese Culture Discussion

Virtual Study Abroad Activities – Japan

We are ready to take our first virtual trip to the model country of Japan. I have traveled to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hakone and had an amazing experience. I would love to return to Japan and hope to have the opportunity to do so in the future. While you are traveling virtually, please observe the cultural influences and various aspects of society with regard to the criminal justice system. As with all of our discussions, I would like to hear your thoughts on this topic. Please do not include any outside information or statistics in your post (quotes, citations, or websites). Be sure to submit an original post to the discussion and also respond to a classmate’s post for full credit.

Please participate in all of the activities before answering the three questions within the discussion (use Word to write your post and then copy + paste the comments to the discussion).

1. Before the virtual activities, please visit the police website for Japan to become familiarized with the crime initiatives and campaigns within Japan through the National Police Agency website located at: https://www.npa.go.jp (Links to an external site.) (English translation available on site by clicking on three dots located in upper right portion of screen. Choose to translate to another language and select English. Keep in mind that some of the Japanese characters will remain on the page even after English translation occurs.)

Question #1: What do you think about the Japanese police agencies and crime campaigns?

2. Virtual walking tour of Kyoto, Japan – Kifune Shrine – I really enjoyed walking in Kyoto and this walking tour provides a view of this beautiful city and the culture in Japan.

Question #2: How did you feel during the walk and what did you learn about Japanese culture?

3. Virtually visit the Tokyo National Museum – Explore Japan’s national treasures including Samurai swords, ancient scrolls, sculpture, and paintings. (English translation available on site by clicking on three dots located in upper right portion of screen. Choose to translate to another language and select English. Keep in mind that some of the Japanese characters may remain on the page even after English translation occurs.) Visiting this museum has been one of the most fascinating experiences that I have had in my travels throughout the world. Seeing these artifacts in person was very interesting. I highly recommend visiting if you are in Tokyo!
