16. What is sexualized violence?

Sexualized violence is when something is done to deliberately arouse a man and in that same instance the violence takes place to sexualize the encounter. Movies and even video games share instances of these encounters which generally sexualizes women and often the violence is being done by a man. These factors can be why rape, sexual assault, and abuse have increased in recent years due to the normality of sexualized violence in male culture. But movies and video games aren’t the only factors to blame in this continuous way of living men hold onto in our culture. The degradation of women has been a trend toxic masculinity has covered over the years of our developing society and will only continue to be relevant as long as men are in control of what media is being produced for our people to consume.

7. Katz claims that media representations illustrate what’s going on in society. What does he say the changes in representations of the body illustrate?

In the film, Katz discusses the rigid gender stereotypes that men face and the various ways society and media affect them. At one point of the educational video, Katz states that many cultural analysts would argue that if you wanna understand something in society to look at it’s media representation. He then goes on to discuss images of men and how there have been dramatic changes have been done in order for them to seem more masculine. This includes the changing in sizes of their bodies to appear bigger or stronger. Katz also mentions how the opposite is happening to women represented in the media and their bodies are becoming smaller. He claims that this also tells us a story about what is going on in culture. Men becoming bigger and women becoming smaller in media have a connection as women are now taking up less space and men are overcompensating to fill that space. He states that the images changing reflect what is happening in the male head and expressing their anxieties or insecurities.
