ANTH 131 Glendale Community College Anthropology Lab Activity
I’m working on a anthropology test / quiz prep and need guidance to help me learn.
You will be using the following Sketchfab 3D images of hominins to answer the questions in this lab. Link to the page with all the models: https://sketchfab.com/edgonzaleztennant/collections/fossil-hominins (Links to an external site.)
Links to each image below:
Homo rudolfensis cranium (Links to an external site.)
Homo habilis cranium (Links to an external site.)
Homo erectus skull from Dmanisi (Links to an external site.)
Homo heidelbergensis from Kabwe (Links to an external site.)
Homo neanderthalensis (Links to an external site.)
Homo sapiens idaltu (Links to an external site.)
Homo sapiens sapiens (Kennewick Man)
Observe the 3D models of skulls of Homo habilis and Homo rudolfensis and answer the following two questions:
1. What similarities and differences do you notice in the skulls? Think about features such as cranial vault size, width and slope of the face, post-orbital constriction, tooth size, etc.
2. Do you think there is good reason to separate these skulls into two species or should they be collapsed into a single species? Explain your reasoning behind your answer.
Question 2
Observe the Homo erectus skull from Dmanisi. List two features that you observe on it that identifies it as Homo erectus.
Question 3
Observe the Homo heidelbergensis skull and compare it to both the Homo erectus from Dmanisi and the modern Homo sapiens from Kennewick. In what ways is it similar to H. erectus? In what ways is it similar to modern H. sapiens?
Question 4
Observe the Homo sapiens idaltu skull and compare it to the modern H. sapiens from Kennewick, Washington. H. sapiens idaltu is considered to be one of the earliest modern human fossils; yet it still displays some features similar to archaic humans. Name one feature of the skull that would classify it as a modern H. sapiens. Name one feature that is more similar to archaic humans.
Question5
According to the short video “Stone Tool Technology of our Human Ancestors” what were the Oldowan tools discussed in the video used for?
