SLAT 7827 University of Queensland Importance of a Corrective Feedback Essay
Assignment description (from ECP)
This essay task asks students to position themselves in terms of the ongoing debate (outlined in the lecture in Week 5) about the effectiveness of feedback on L2 writing. The essay question is:
‘To what extent is written corrective feedback on L2 writing beneficial for improvement in L2 writing development?’
Students will need to negotiate with the following concerns (not necessarily all of them) in their response, namely:
What kind of feedback has been shown/proven to drive improvements in L2 writing?
What are the benefits of feedback on L2 writing, from the point of view of students and/or teachers?
What are the shortcomings of feedback on L2 writing, from the point of view of students and/or teachers?
Are there any potential current/future developments in providing feedback that may help drive L2 writing development?
Students are required to draw on their own personal / professional experience with L2 feedback when formulating their response, alongside appropriate reference to the literature where relevant.
There is no set structure/format for the essay, although the length should be approximately 1,200 words (excluding references/appendices).
References should be provided in APA7th format at all times (e.g. for both in-text citation and end of text reference lists).
Overuse of direct quotes will be penalised, as will excessive borrowing from source texts.
