Keiser University E of A Justice Based Approach Reflection Paper

PART 1

Kohlberg’s Theory on Moral Development employed more of a justice-based approach, whereas Gilligan employed more of a care-based approach. Gilligan argued that Kohlberg’s Theory neglects the feminine voice of compassion, love, and non-violence, which is associated with the socialization of girls. Gilligan concluded that Kohlberg’s theory did not account for the fact that women approach moral problems from an “ethics of care”, rather than an “ethics of justice” perspective, which challenges some of the fundamental assumptions of Kohlberg’s theory. Someone who uses a justice-based approach in moral reasoning may feel a person should be sent to jail if he or she steals. Whereas someone who uses a caring-based approach would ask the circumstances that led to the person stealing. For example, did the person steal to provide food for their child?

Given the explanation, do you feel justice should be the most fundamental moral principle? Please explain your response.
