HIST 309 UM Evaluating Primary and Secondary Sources Discussion

Assignment:

For this assignment discuss your views (based on the course readings) on the following questions (respond to these questions in your initial post, due by Sunday):

1. Are historical facts objectively true, why or why not?(Here we are not talking about some sort of eternal truth, but instead the facts historians find in their primary sources)

2. Are all facts and sources you will encounter in your research of equal value? What would you do if two primary sources disagreed about a factual point?

3. What steps do researchers follow to ascertain the reliability of a secondary source, such as an academic journal article or monograph?

4. If a source is not completely reliable, must it be rejected outright? Why or why not?

Provide at least one concrete example from the readings to illustrate your answer in Chicago style 17 edition format.
