HUM Middle Tennessee State University Sherlock Holmes Discussion

The search for the truth… That is the thread common throughout the whole genre of detective fiction. Sherlock Holmes, the detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has become the icon of the great detective. Combining characteristics of those literary detectives who have come before him, and yet a personality of force in and of himself, he is a master of intellect and disguise.

But we should not neglect the cultural insights offered through his short story. This is about more than just murder and mystery. Be sure to read the article posted here after you read the short story. Nothing is as straightforward as it seems at first glance in the world of detective fiction.

After you have posted your answer to the first discussion question, take a look at the movie adaptation linked below. What changes to you perceive in the adaptation from book to movie? Now answer the question and discuss with your classmates in the second discussion board question.

1. Read “The Sign of the Four.”

2. Answer the first discussion question.

3. Read the article “Addiction and Imperialism” – note especially the “Four punctures” and what they are.

4. Answer the question about Cultural Anxieties in the third discussion question.

Discuss: Who is Sherlock Holmes? Describe him and his method of detecting in The Sign of the Four. You must include two brief quotes from this text that support your description. Now, Sherlock is probably the best known private detective in the world. But Sir Arthur Conan Doyle appears to have a different motive than JUST solving a mystery in this story. What is that motive – or that cultural anxiety that struck you? Refer to the article you read, perhaps referencing one or two of the “punctures” mentioned. For your discussion post a 250-275 word reaction to the prompt. Please note, you must first post your answer before you can see classmates’ posts.

After completing your initial post, return to this discussion forum within 48 hours and respond to at least two classmates, in a length of about 100 words each. This response should include commonalities, connections, and reference to comments that are of interest.
