Santa Monica College Understanding the American Government Discussion
making a personal statement or comment about the topic area. DO NOT just restate or summarize the reading materials or some key points and then say you learned that information or found it interesting. DO NOT just reword what is covered in the readings or list definitions, historical or factual information. Avoid filling your message with broad statements or general information that you get from the readings, from another source or from the Internet.
Instead, you should provide your own personal commentary about something contained in the readings and be sure your comments relate back to the topic of the discussion. Stay very narrowly focused and find one small aspect, concept or point to comment on, rather than writing about the entire broad topic area. For example, you could
- – explain something you found to be most interesting in the readings and WHY you find it interesting,
- – elaborate on something you believe you’ve learned from the readings and HOW it has helped your study of American Government,
- – connect material from the readings to a personal story or a current event, or
- – express your personal thoughts, ideas and opinions about something covered in the readings.
