Harvard Multi Generational Living Beneficial to Older Adults & Society Discussion

 

One in five Americans lives in a multi generational household.  There are many variables that factor into our living arrangements in older adulthood, such as socioeconomic status, interpersonal relationships, culture, medical/health needs, psychological health, home architecture, neighborhood safety, social policies, and more.  One re-emerging trend is the multigenerational household, where older generations are living with their adult child (and possibly their children/spouses/partners) or with their grandchildren (sometimes as their caretakers and other times so grandchildren can be caretakers).  Multigenerational living offers many advantages for individuals and families but also presents some challenges.  Let’s explore this trend in more detail.
