I’m working on a Ethnic Studies question and need guidance to help me study.

A double journal is a note-taking format that allows you to engage with course content but also allow for your personal response to the course content. This format requires you to select content that is significant or important to YOU, copy that section verbatim, and then write your thoughts about the content in a side by side format.

Here’s how to create it:

1) Open a new document (e.g. Google Doc or Word)

2) Create a table and label accordingly:

3) On the LEFT column, you insert the quote or passage that stood out to you during your reading as particularly compelling, significant, insightful, synthesizing, etc. Include the author’s name and page number (in parentheses) so that you can easily retrace the location of this passage should you need to reference it later.

4) On the RIGHT column, you write your thoughts about this passage. Why is this passage important? What came before this passage? What came after this passage? How does it help summarize or make sense of the entire reading for you?
