Music Could Be Interpreted for Deaf Audience Apart from Translating Words Reflection

Part 1: In the Module for this week you were presented with five reflection questions. Please choose one of these reflection questions and write a paragraph of 5-6 sentances expressing your thoughts.

Reflection #1: How would you modify a music concert if you knew that every person attending was having a different sensory experience?

Reflection #2: Who is leading this ensemble? How do you know who is leading? (refers to Video 2 Artism Example)

Reflection #3:What might a make equitable performance arrangement look like?

Reflection #4: Imagine a musical performance. What senses other than hearing are being engaged and how?

Reflection #5: Are there additional ways music could be “interpreted” for a deaf/HoH audience, on top of translating the words?

Part 2: Reflecting on the module as a whole, consider whether or not have you started thinking of access to music differently depending on people’s (dis)ability. In a paragraph of 5-6 sentences, explain if and how your position or perspective has changed. Possible questions to discuss, though you are not limited to these:

  • Were there adaptations or considerations made in the module you’d not considered before?
  • Is the concept of disability as culture or cultures new to you? Does it change your perspective on our class topic, Introduction to Music Cultures of the World?
  • In what ways does this module introduce self-advocacy for disabled people/people with disabilities? Do these bring up new experiences or observations for you?
  • The previous question is [intentionally!] worded in a way to include both person-first and identity-first language. Are these concepts new to you, or did any of these discussions reframe your language usage? Were there other facets of language surrounding disability that were new to you?
  • Is there anything this module is missing, or that you still have questions about?
