CUNY QCC Ethical Egoism Act Egoism and Rule Egoism Discussion

There are two types of ethical egoism:

  • Act-egoism
  • Rule-egoism

Explain the difference between the two.

Ethical egoism assumes psychological egoism to be true. In the section “Evaluating the Theory” Vaughn explains how ethical egoism does not meet the 3 criteria described in chapter 4. Re-read that section and then summarize what he says. You can start re-reading from where Vaughn writes “This argument is based on a conceptual confusion” (a clue to the nature of this confusion is captured in the cartoon above–another are the examples Vaughn gives on pages 97-98, in his discussion of the reasons why we take self-interested “satisfaction” in our actions). Then re-read pages 97-100, making notes and highlighting key points.

As an alternative to the above option, you can choose ONE of the following review questions:

1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 9

Or you can discuss this cartoon (see link below) in the light of what you have learned about ethical egoism, which is a moral theory that argues against what is called altruism:

“What if I help you. . .?”
