For those who don’t know, Sports Illustrated was (and remains in some ways) an incredibly popular sports magazine that started in the mid 1950s. Down from its heydey (as most print magazines are) it stopped publishing a weekly magazine and for the past few years (inlcuding in 2018) published every two weeks. So you’ll find 26 issues in 2018.

The covers provide us with a sliver of women’s sport media coverage – but it is, nonetheless, a good example of how women’s sport is represented to us in a more contemporary (and not historical) moment. If, for some reason, the link doesn’t work, I ask that you copy/paste it into your browser and you should be good to go!

After you’ve had a chance to read Susan Cahn’s chapter as well as take a look at the TED talk posted for this week, I ask that you look closely at the 26 covers of Sports Illustrated from 2018. In your 5-7 minute presentation I’d like for you to discuss these covers in general terms (when do women appear on the cover and how are they represented, when do men appear on the cover and how are they represented). What connections can you make to the women’s sport history we’ve discussed in this short course? Tell me about those connections in your oral presentation (lasting 5-7 minutes).

Do your best to make specific links to course material by referencing, in your oral presentation, something said in Cahn’s chapters, one of my lecture, a video you watched in class, etc.
