George Mason University Week 8 The Influence of Concert Music in Film Music Paper

Assignments for Week 8:

  1. Hickman  discusses a series of changes that are beginning to take place in film  music influenced by composers of concert music. Please discuss how those  changes were realized and how these changes might relate back to  composer Aaron Copland’s comments in What to Listen for in Music, “…when  you listen to a composer’s creation you are listening…, to a  particular individual.”
  2. Please relate the changes that Hickman ascribes to Herrmann’s score for Citizen Kane to your listening/viewing of the film. Where does Herrmann’s “lack  of warmth” musical score work best? Identify moments when the power  motive as well as the Rosebud motive provide the listener with an  understanding of some psychological perspective to our main focus,  Charles Foster Kane. Include cue timings, ex. 00:11:30-00:12:15.
  3. This  film does not have leitmotifs in the sense of melodies for specific  actors, but motifs that are related to underlying psychological elements  of characters. I am asking you to identify and describe elements from  Hickman’s description of Herrmann’s score  for Citizen Kane (orchestration and two principal motives) that were  meaningful towards YOUR experience with the film. In what way did you  apply your awareness of this element to gaining a deeper understanding  of the film? List multiple examples (at least 3) , be sure to include  descriptions of the scene and the connection between the music and the  story.
