This chapter you will be doing a small bit of research on ONE dead or dying language – one noted in Ahearn or another you are familiar with. Depending upon what you find, select some aspect of the language that has not be posted yet. For example:

– Discuss the historical context of the language. When and where was the language used?

– What was the social/cultural context of the language? What was it used for? Who spoke it? Was it related to some specifc aspect of the society/culture (ex: trade, religion, government, something else)? Provide some examples.

– Even though the language is dead/dying/being revitalized, does it still influence any existing language(s)? How so or why not? If the language has been extinct for quite some time, consider how it might have influenced other extinct languages.

– What was the cause of the language’s demise?

Please TRY to keep the duplication of information to a minimum, so please be sure to check out what your classmates have written. Try to pick just one of the topics above – leave room for your classmates to respond. You will want to give specific detail and provide the source(s) of your information. An A-level post should be at least 500 words in length.

Do not use any of these languages as they have already been used in the discussion: Ancient Chinese,Manchu,Ancient Greek,Yucateco Maya,Sumerian,Te Reo Maori,Sanskrit,Hebrew.
