Disproportionality in special education

One risk factor not mentioned in your textbook is the issue of disproportionality, where students of color are more likely to be placed in special education programs. Studies show that bias based on race, ethnicity, and other factors plays a part in the way that students are identified for special education. When we look at the achievement gap, school dropout rates, school exit exams, and rates of school suspensions, we see a very interesting pattern that significantly impacts students of color.
