How to Read a Journal Article

This may seem like an unnecessary topic to address, but believe me, it’s not!! Many of you may not have experience reading an academic journal article until you take your first research methods class. That shouldn’t be! Students taking this course are doing so because it’s a prerequisite for your application to the nursing program.

Journal articles offer a window into the inner workings of academic field (e.g., psychology, nursing, history, chemistry, etc.). They document how researchers formulate hypotheses, design empirical studies, analyze the observations they collect, and interpret their results. Journal articles also serve as documentation of past research which allows researchers to build on past findings and advance one’s understanding of a discipline. Journal articles are a primary means of communicating research findings.

For beginning readers, journal articles may seem anything but interesting and exciting. They may appear to be confusing, even daunting at times, and you may think you’ll never understand what the authors are talking about. With this in mind, the article that you’ve been assigned, Reading Research Reports: A Brief Introduction, will give you the basic information you’ll need to read journal articles with a greater sense of comfort.
