What you will do for this short essay is choose any essay, either in the textbook, or from the semester’s readings, or from a legitimate publication. I would suggest choosing one that we studied in class, as it will take some stress out of the assignment. 

Once you choose an essay, you will then set about analyzing it, in a unified, focused, in-depth, well-supported essay, examining the author’s use of rhetorical strategies. In other words, you will analyze his/her use of….

-Logos (this includes reasoning, like the strength of their claims, the support/examples, the presence of any fallacies, or confirmation bias.)

-Pathos (emotional appeals) 

-Ethos (credibility of the writer) This one is less important than the other two, and is optional. 

You can go through the essay paragraph by paragraph, or piece by piece. I will leave it to you to decide how you want to structure it. The important thing is that you analyze these aspects, and you do so in clear, unified, focused paragraphs that use support from the text you are analyzing. 

You will be graded on the following: 

-Quality of analysis-using support from the text for your claims (textual quotes and summary), and using sound reasoning without fallacies.
