Initial Post

The era of Reconstruction in the American South was a pivotal period for African-Americans.  On the one hand, the period witnessed important advancements for the rights of blacks in the South.  On the other hand, there were also definite efforts to repress African-Americans during this period. For the forum, respond to the following question:  Was the era of Reconstruction primarily a period of advancement or repression for blacks in the South?

In your initial post you should: 1) take a clear a position on whether you think Reconstruction was primarily a period of advancement or repression for blacks – expressed in a thesis statement; 3) support your thesis by discussing the contents of at least three documents; 4) address counter-arguments in at least three documents  – explaining why they deserve less emphasis. Provide context for the documents using the textbook and web-site.  Your post should be at least 250 words long.
