“To begin this week of reflection on self-care, our reading is very light — it’s the end of the semester after all.

An activity that is another practical application, is a “grief mapping” exercise that is actually geared for kids in grades 6-12. You will find the link provided. http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=37… Although this exercise is geared for kids, it is potentially helpful for anyone. The concept is simple — take a big, long piece of paper and draw a line from birth to now, and start “mapping” all the points of experienced loss. Start with loss through death and expand it to include other kinds of losses. Think about how you processed these losses over your lifetime and think about whether or not you see a pattern. Get someone else you know to do this also and discuss your timelines. You can pair up with another student  in the class if you like and do this over email. This kind of exercise can help us to understand the bigger picture of how grief and loss affect us. You are not asked to share your loss map in this course although you may choose to do so.

This week’s discussion is for exploring the concept of death competence and resilience. The following bullet points are just suggestions for possible foci for your post.

  • What does it mean to have “death competence?”
  • Why is it important?
  • How can we take care of ourselves?
  • What is your self-care plan?
  • What did you learn about yourself from your grief map?
  • What does the article have to tell us?
