This is a case study assignment. You will have an opportunity to research a conflict and write a paper, provide an annotated bibliography, and make a short presentation to your colleagues about your case. This assignment is composed of three (3) parts: a paper, a presentation, and a peer review. Armed conflicts starting with WWI.

Assignment objectives:

  1. Analyze the origins/causes of an armed conflict within various theoretical frameworks.
  2. Present and explain the case study to colleagues.

Your case study — lottery by September 23.

Paper:

Your paper must address the following points/questions

  1. An overview of your armed conflict—what type of armed conflict is your case? Interstate or intrastate or proxy war?
  2. What theories or explanations explain the armed conflict, e.g., realism, liberalism, levels of analysis, or a post-colonial struggle, or failed state, etc.
  3. What is its current status?
  4. Reflect on how your case contributes to a better understanding of negative peace. Consider the following:

*If your conflict was resolved, what methods of negative peace helped achieve this?
*Can your conflict be used as an example for others?

Summary Annotated Bibliography:

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations for various books, articles, and other sources on a topic. The annotated bibliography looks like a Works Cited page but includes an annotation after each source cited. An annotation is a short summary and/or critical evaluation of a source.

Paper Format (100 points):

  1. Paper overview 500 – 600 words. Include your word count.
  2. Upload to Canvas. Save your paper as Text (.txt), Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx), Portable Document Format (.pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), or Open Office Text (.odt)
  3. Double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12 font, page numbers, cover sheet.
  4. Annotated bibliography section
    • You will need to provide four (4) to six (6) sources for the annotated bibliography.
    • Each annotation is 75 – 100 words. Include a word count for each.
  5. MLA format (Links to an external site.)
  6. Turnitin will be enabled. Turnitin scores over 30% will not be accepted.
  7. Please be mindful of all directions. Submissions that do not follow all the directions will be subject to a 20% grade.

Presentation (30 pts.)

1. You can choose any of the following formats for your presentation:
a. Original artwork
b. PowerPoint (max 5 slides)
c. Infographics
d. Traditional poster
2. During the presentation, you will be presenting your conflict to your colleagues by referring to the presentation/poster. You will have approximately 10 minutes.
3. Your colleagues will be asking questions and making comments, and scoring your presentation.
4. Your presentation may be recorded.
5. Upload your poster into the Canvas. If you are doing a traditional poster then take a picture and upload it.
