SOCW 4004 Walden University Benefits of Group Work Discussion
Discussion 1 (A) Much work is done in different social work groups each day, but often the benefits of these groups may not be as readily apparent. For this Discussion, you recall and reflect on a group in which you were a participant. (The group you recall does not have to be a social work group. Consider social settings or even school activities when choosing your group). Then, you consider the characteristics of that group and how each relates to the group. Remember strengths of the group as you also think more generally about the benefits of group work.
- Describe the purpose of a group in which you were a participant.
- Describe one positive and one negative characteristic of the group process that you learned from this group.
- Explain how you determined that each aspect was either positive or negative.
- Explain why these strengths are important for group work to occur.
- Discussion 1 (B) Which social service organizations led to common group practices today? How can you build on the dedication, insight, and success of those who established these effective practices? And, how can you learn from challenges faced by others to overcome challenges you may face in your own group practice? In this Discussion, you engage with the strong sense of history among social workers to examine how the past informs the present. To prepare: Use the Walden Library to research one of the founding organizations of group work
