HUM 186 UP WK 5 Do You Think the News Standard Is Changing Discussion
I need help with a Humanities question. All explanations and answers will be used to help me learn.
In today’s world we get information from a variety of mediums. Often we get so many messages that we have learned to either tune them out or filter them. I would also add that whenever this topic comes up, I often think of news.
I think that the public needs to be aware of what a trusted news source is and what it is not. For example, I do not think that a political agenda can affect a trustworthy source. However, I most certainly think this type of agenda can influence a ‘biased’ source as the only purpose is to push a personal agenda.
Today many people are quite skeptical about news stories on the whole, I am as well. I was fortunate to work in a traditional newsroom and have seen the difference in the way that news is presented today. Today, we need to ask questions and explore the validity of any information received. Unfortunately today many people do not take this step. However, we (public) are supposed to be able to rely on our news sources. I find it humorous that some news stations advertise as ‘the public’s trusted news source.’ Each time I see this tagline I laugh a little because it tells me that even the news stations recognize that the public sometimes struggles to determine what is ‘truth’ and what is ‘fluff.’
Some years ago there were ownership rules in place that were designed to keep news stations objective. However, we are seeing more ‘cross-ownership’ of media outlets, which can cause ‘conflicts of interest’ on many levels.
Do you think the news standard is changing?
