Primary sources are first-hand accounts of historical events, including materials like government documents, autobiographies and memoirs of participants, and archives.

In this assignment, you will read a primary source, using the source text to explain the basic beliefs of one of the major early Chinese philosophies we discussed in class. How are concepts like moral/ethical behavior, good government, wise leadership, and societal structure defined and developed in that philosophy?

Choose one of the following primary sources, listed by the philosophy and author with which they are associated:

• Legalism, Han Feizi
• Daoism, Laozi
• Confucianism, Confucius

You may consult other, secondary sources for reference, but you must quote from the primary text to give examples of the concepts you are explaining. If you do consult outside texts, make sure to include them on a References page, and cite them in your essay if you reference ideas from them.

This essay:

Must be approximately 750 words long.

Must be double-spaced with 1-inch margins all around and typed in 12-point Times New Roman.

Must include in-text citations in APA format.

Should be in essay format, with an introduction and thesis statement, body paragraphs developing your ideas, and a conclusion to summarize and wrap up your analysis.

Should be proofread for spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Should be submitted as a Word document (either .doc or .docx).
