Assessment and Selection Interview

During this course, you have learned many aspects of the organizational assessment and selection process. The assessment and selection process has a great impact on all functions of the organization. Many successful organizations understand the impact and give employee recruitment, selection, and retention issues the attention that other core business functions like marketing and finance receive. Organizations rely on staffing professionals to manage the talent flow in and out of the organization to hire and retain employees to meet organizational goals now and into the future.

For this assignment you will interview a local human resources professional about his or her organization’s assessment and selection process and the strategies the professional uses to promote ethical and legal compliance within the organization. You will then write a 7- to 9-page paper using the interview responses and examples, integrating it with the research literature and what you learned this term.

Please include the following information in your paper:

  • Interview Questions and Transcript (1–2 pages)
    • List the 8–12 open-ended interview questions you used for the interview of a local HR professional and briefly paraphrase what the HR professional answered.
      • Topics for the questions include recruitment, assessments, selection, hiring, legal and ethical considerations, career and succession planning, etc.
  • Interview Evaluation and Analysis (4–5 pages)
    • Explain the importance of assessment and selection in terms of an organization’s current and future goals. How do human resources activities connect and contribute to organizational success?
    • Describe the types of assessments the organization uses and their reasoning for their choice of assessments. Describe other assessments that may be appropriate for the organization.
    • Evaluate the employee recruitment, selection, and hiring process from the perspective of the candidate.
    • Identify which of the performance methods (Six Sigma or Balanced Scorecard) you would suggest that the interviewee’s organization use for organizational evaluation. Analyze why one would be a better fit over the other, identifying the pros and cons to each.
    • Analyze the impact of using assessment, evaluation, and performance appraisals in the organization. Identify two strategies to improve their assessment and selection process.
    • Evaluate one ethical and one legal concern an organization should consider when using both of the following: (1) assessments and (2) performance appraisals.
    • Discuss how neglecting to follow ethical and legal guidelines affects an organization.
  • Reflection (1–2 pages)
    • Imagine yourself as a human resources or I/O psychology professional. What kinds of problems might you encounter during the recruitment, assessment, selection, and retention process? How do you plan to solve the problems?
    • Based on your research and knowledge, what recommendations might you give to your interviewee to improve their organization’s assessment and selection process and promote overall legal compliance during the hiring process?
