HBS Sacramento Prioritizes the Care of Senior Citizens Discussion

Here is the discussion question:  identify and describe the city you selected.  Then, share 2-3 key facts about the seniors in that community (i.e. demographics of seniors, not the whole community).  Next, discuss 3-4 resources for seniors in that community and explain how these are important to the well-being of seniors.  Are there any services missing?

The discussion answer: SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE OLDER ADULTSNew Jersey is a constituent state of the United States of America and is bounded by New York to the northern and north-eastern part. In New Jersey, approximately 62.9% of Hudson county seniors live alone or in two-person families have earnings that are less than the cost of a basic standards of living (Herzog, 2016). According to the latest recent demographic estimates from the United States Census Bureau, approximately 15% of New Jersey residents (1.292 million individuals) are 65 or older (Herzog, 2016). Hence, it has a lot of elderly adults who need care and support in the community. According to the foundation, around 586,975 seniors live alone or in two-person households (Herzog, 2016). Despite the fact that many are officially above the federal poverty threshold, the foundation claims that many do not get enough money from Social Security to meet their basic necessities.Social support is a very important portion for the older adults in the community. Social support constitutes both emotional and physical consolation by family, friends, community, coworkers and others (BC and Anxiety, 2014). My classmates posts: 1- Antonio Martinez: Hello class , I came across a few places within Orange County that have many resources for the elderly population. The first one I discovered is in Fullerton, CA which is Meals on Wheels. The program delivers 2 meals to Fullerton residents, with two food sources, St Jude Medical center and Community SeniorServ. Thus, providing specialized diets like dialysis , cardiac, and diabetic meals. This resources is beneficial for those who are homebound/ unable to shop  or prepare their own meals. Moreover , I also came across a social service agency located in Santa Ana. This agency is known for it’s In-Home Support services which provides support services  to those who are 65 and older, disabled and blind. It’s targeted for those who are limited in their ability to care for themselves and cannot live home safely without assistance. This also includes those set to return to their homes from a hospital, nursing home , or board, and care homes , if they had assistance in their homes. Additionally , there is also the Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect at UCI for the elderly population undergoing abuse , which is based in Irvine. This organization aids those who are abused / neglected. The center has endeavored to help eliminate abuse and mistreatment through a variety of mechanisms at local , state , and private donations. Moreover , working alongside a team of local agencies providing medical services to abused, neglected , and exploited seniors living in the community or in long term care facilities. Write reply..

2- Marianne Gourd: The  city I selected is Irvine, and it’s a big city with multiple programs  and places for seniors to go. One fact about that city is that they have  numerous retirement places/ communities that offer homes or apartments  for the different financial backgrounds of people. One of the retirement  communities that are a significant part of Irvine is The Golden Creek.  The demographic of the seniors are people over seventy, and the majority  consists of equal gender. One of the programs that Irvine offers is the  TRIPS program, a low-cost transportation service to seniors/adults with  disabilities and is wheelchair accessible. Transportation to seniors,  especially disabled ones, is essential because it’s having a sense of  freedom to go where they want despite if they can’t do it on their own,  so with this program, they don’t have to worry about not going to  places. Another thing that the city of Irvine offers is support groups  to seniors and their caregivers and family; there are a wide variety of  support groups in different areas of Irvine. Support groups are  essential to seniors, and being able to share their feelings and have  support helps them feel validated and makes them feel like they matter,  which allows their mental health. The city offers the meals on wheels  program, a nonprofit organization that delivers healthy homemade meals  to homebound seniors who can’t cook for themselves. Meals on wheels help  seniors maintain a sense of independence, lessen the difficulty of  putting strain on their selves, and not have to worry about whether  they’re going to eat or not. compare  and contrast your community with your classmate’s community.  How are  they similar?  Different?  Why might this be?  Look past the obvious and  dig deeper into what’s driving programming (e.g. money, demographics,  culture, urban/rural location, etc.) and/or the lack thereof.
