Chapter 13

Chapter 13 was definitely a powerful chapter that I felt was very important information to protect the children we care for. After reading about using documentation for child abuse suspicions and looking for self concept I now have a better understanding of the responsibilities of early childhood professionals to prevent child abuse. “Early childhood programs have the responsibility to keep children safe” (Nilsen, 2017, p.369). Some information that stood out to me was on page 369 when it talked about the physical and behavioral indicators of abuse such as, reason cause to suspect, the child’s appearance, behavior indicators, the child’s description or disclosure, and circumstantial evidence. It’s important to be familiar with the physical and behavioral indicators of abuse to protect the children in our care. Something I learned is on page 377 when it discussed diversity and child abuse. According to the textbook, “Child-rearing has distinctive differences among various cultures concerning obedience, punishment dependency, and eye contact” (Nilsen, 2017, p.377). I now know to take this information into consideration, but it’s also important that the laws mandate and the program’s responsibility to report all cases of suspected maltreatment. My favorite thing overall about the chapter was on page 394 when it discussed how to help all children with self-esteem. I felt this is so important because children at a very young age are capable of feeling ashamed and perceiving negative social status that lowers self-esteem. One new fact I learned was how to use the self-esteem class list log and how self esteem is revealed in developmental domains. According to the textbook, “The characteristics of confidence, curiosity, and independence are seen as displays of high self esteem, while sober demeanor and reticence to make eye contact or to speak may be seen as low self esteem” (Nilsen, 2017, p.391). This part of the chapter inspired me to use this information while observing and assessing behaviors and using the self-esteem class list log. I will use the knowledge gained from this chapter to document and report all child abuse suspicions. I will use the skill of looking for physical and behavioral indicators of abuse. I will not discuss the suspicions with the family or the child to allow authorities to take further action. I will consider diversity and child abuse and will use tools to observe self-concept and self-esteem.
